On the "Pearl of the Caribbean" Barbados, the relative affluence of the population and the large tourism sector has cultivated an increased demand for consumer food products. Barbados, one of the most promising markets for U.S. exporters in the Caribbean, imported approximately $131 million in total food products, with 70 percent of the imports destined for the retail sector.

The Barbados’ Ministry of Commerce, Consumer Affairs and Business Development announced that effective May 15, 2002, the Ministry would be implementing the "In-quota System", as set out in Barbados’ Schedule of Commitment under the World Trade Organization (WTO) for some agricultural product imports.

U.S. food products destined for Barbados must now add "Best Before" dates to product labels to comply with the mandatory labeling now being enforced by the Barbados Government. "Non-conforming goods" will be refused entry.

In response to pressure from the Barbados Hotel and Tourism Association, the Government of Barbados announced the reduction of bound rates of duty from up to 210% down to 15%-40% for twenty-nine products used by the hotel industry. This should provide increased export opportunities for US food products to the food service sector in Barbados.
